Non-Euclidean Timekeeper
Light sculpture for a time-themed event.
My first time blending kinetic artwork with light.
This design was limited by the components that I wished to spend money on.
I wanted to avoid expensive slip rings, motors and bearings (especially if I didn't know whether they would work) and ended up designing my way into a bit of a corner.
Next time I create similar pieces I'll focus on simplifying the actuation and power transfer as much as possible.
Sailing, Fixing, Building Boats
On April 1st 2024 I embarked on a 42 day voyage across the Pacific with 3 others on a 40ft monohull sailboat. I had the idea of sailing to Europe in mind and was fortunate to find this crew on Facebook.
We hand sailed from an Island South of Tahiti (Tubuai) to Pascua (Easter Island)
This involved:
Fixes at sea - straightening mast by re-tensioning cables (see image of how we achieved this - with a handheld scale and a tape measure)
Patching the sail, replacing fixtures that had been improperly installed, fixing leaks.
First hand experience of social dynamics in confined quarters
Mental toughness required for life at sea and understanding of living in small, moving spaces in extreme environments
A lot of hands on sailing (1000+nautical miles with my hands on the wheel - night and day. 4000+ involved in sailing in some way)
Greater understanding of weather
Practicing emergency procedures
After a month in Chile and another in Bavaria, I joined a project in the heart of Berlin - turning an old cargo ship into a houseboat.
See the renders and plans I created and relevant photos of the construction.
Finally, I concluded my travels with another sailing voyage - this time in Greece, on a boat that had been constructed by one of the people in the houseboat project.
This involved more creative fixes and maintenance at sea, as well as an understanding of catamaran handling and sailing techniques.
