Berlin Houseboat Design and Construction
During my time in Berlin, I stayed for four months on houseboats while constructing one of them - Elizabeth.
A 40 metre long * 6 metre wide, 150 year old river cargo ship.
I was involved with:
Measurement and CAD design of the boat hull/ structure and rendering intended layouts for future spaces. Creating architectural drawings for a bank loan proposal.
Removing old floor, rust (1.2 tonnes of rust from the hull), roof, cutting through bulkheads.
Making design decisions and spending months building:
New floor, mezzanine level, roofing structure and building a waterproof roof along the length of the boat. Putting in 64 windows.
Creating a livable space inside (kitchen, toilet, shower) for ourselves while building the boat.
Onboarding and managing new people in continuing construction.
I met a lot of awesome people through this and had accommodation in the very heart of Berlin - an experience I'm very grateful for.
The owners invited me to sail with them on a self-made catamaran in Greece. Another awesome adventure.
I'm still in touch and occasionally do work for them from NZ.
